Patron, a 2.5-year-old white-and-red dog of the Jack Russell Terrier breed, serves in the division of the State Emergency Service of the Chernihiv region and is involved in mine clearing.
The owner of the Patron is Mikhail Ilyev, head of the pyrotechnic control group of the State Emergency Service of Ukraine in the Chernihiv region. In 2020, he gave a puppy to his son, and it was originally planned that the pet would be brought up to participate in exhibitions.
However, already at the age of six months, Patron showed the ability of a search dog, and Mikhail began to take him on missions and gradually taught him to recognize explosives by smell. At the same time, Ilyev did not think that this occupation would become the main thing for the dog, and he himself would turn into a symbol. However, the war made its own adjustments.
With the beginning of the invasion of the Russian Armed Forces in Ukraine, the animal began to be involved in demining territories. Due to its low weight (about four kilograms), the dog is indispensable in the search for anti-personnel mines, which detonate when weighing five kilograms. As of May 8, Patron helped find 236 explosive devices.
The cartridge is called the mascot of the sapper detachment, the national hero and the most famous dog of Ukraine. Milota adds a personalized vest with a handle, for which the rescuers wear it, so that he is less tired. The animal is depicted on murals, drawings, memes, and even launched various products with its image. It is possible that Patron may become the new hero of the brand from Ukrposhta.
